The UAW Retirees of Daimler Trucks North America Welfare Benefit Trust, (the “Trust”) provides health care benefits for eligible UAW retirees from DTNA, along with their covered dependents. Currently, the Trust provides health care benefits to more than 900 retirees and their eligible dependents. This arrangement was made possible through a lawsuit between the UAW and Daimler Trucks North America in 2014. The agreement approved by the court, between the UAW and DTNA, transferred all of the retiree health care liabilities to a new independent Voluntary Employee Beneficiary Association (VEBA).
The Trust administers the health care plans covering retirees and has tax exempt status as a VEBA under section 501(c)(9) of the Internal Revenue Code.
The Trust is governed by a 7 person Committee. Three members are appointed by the UAW; the other four are independent of the UAW and were approved by the federal district court as part of the settlement agreement. The responsibilities of the Committee are considerable including determining the types of coverage and levels of benefits the Trust will provide now and into the future.
The Committee recognizes that your retiree benefits provide important protection for you and your dependents. Accordingly, the Committee seeks to make available to eligible UAW DTNA retirees comprehensive and cost effective retiree benefit programs with the funds that it manages. From time to time, the Committee may change the programs that it makes available and reserves the right to do so and to terminate such programs as it determines in its sole discretion.
