Frequently Asked Pension Questions

Q.

I am ready to retire, what do I need to do?

A.

Contact the benefit office at least 90 days prior to your desired retirement date to request a retirement application packet.  Retirement dates are always the first day of any month.  At a minimum, you will be asked to fill out the application forms and to provide photocopies of your birth certificate, spouse's birth certificate and your marriage certificate (if married and the Joint & Survivor Annuity is selected.)

Q.

How soon can I retire if I want to retire before age 65?

A.

A Participant may elect “Early Retirement” as early as the first day of any month on or after reaching age 55. Should you elect to retire and draw benefits before reaching age 65, the amount of your monthly pension benefit will be reduced for each month that your early retirement date precedes your normal retirement date.

Q.

Is my retirement benefit reduced if I retire early?

A.

Should you elect to retire and draw benefits before reaching age 65, the amount of your monthly pension benefit will be reduced for each month that your early retirement date precedes your normal retirement date.

Q.

Can I put money into my Pension Plan?

A.

The OPI Pension Trust is funded by employer contributions only. The plan has terminated so no additional contributions are accepted into the plan.

Q.

How often will I receive a Pension Statement from the Plan Administrator?

A.

Generally, active and terminated vested participants can expect to receive an annual benefit statement once every three years. Retirees do not receive benefit statements.

Q.

If I die prior to retirement is there a payable benefit?

A.

If you had not yet retired by the time of your death, your spouse may be eligible to receive the pre-retirement spouse monthly death benefit payable from the Trust.

If you are retired, the benefit option you selected at retirement will determine what, if any, survivor benefits are to be paid. Upon notification, the benefit office will send the necessary application forms to your beneficiary. A photocopy of your death certificate and, if married, a copy of your marriage certificate will be required.

If you are not yet retired, it is important to maintain an up-to-date beneficiary designation form. This will help ensure that your benefits are paid to the beneficiary you intend it to. You can request the beneficiary form from the benefit office or print a copy of the beneficiary form from this website. Be sure to fill the form out COMPLETELY and mail the original to the benefit office.
