Frequently Asked Pension Questions



Q. I am going through a divorce, what happens to my pension?
A.  You will need to submit your divorce decree and any related documentation.  If your spouse is entitled to a portion of your benefits, you will need to submit a draft Qualified Domestic Relations Order (QDRO) for the Fund's review.
Q. Does the Pension Plan affect Social Security benefits in any way?
A.  No, pension benefits are not impacted by your Social Security, nor vice versa.
Q. Can pensions be paid or assigned or garnished to others?
A.  Pension benefits can be garnished under certain circumstances (ex. Child support, IRS lien).  Your pension benefit cannot otherwise be assigned to another entity (unless via QDRO).
Q. If benefits are denied, may a retiree or beneficiary appeal?
A.  Yes.  An appeal may be submitted to the Fund Office at 10312 Remington Drive, Hagerstown, MD 21740
Q. How far in advance should I request an application for retirement?
A.  Preferably 3 months but no more than 6 months ahead of your desired retirement date.
Q. In addition to the application for retirement, what other documents do I have to submit to the Fund office?
A.  A Birth Certificate for you and spouse, Marriage Certificate, and any Divorce Decrees with Separation and/or Property Settlement Agreements (if applicable)
Q. I am currently receiving a monthly pension benefit from the Plan and would like to change the tax withholding. What needs to be done?
A.  Send in a new W4-P form (available on the internet or request from the Fund Office).
Q. I am currently receiving a monthly pension benefit from the Plan and would like to change the bank account information. How do I change this information?
A.  Changes must be in writing.  Request a Direct Deposit Form from the Fund Office .
Q. I am currently receiving a monthly pension benefit from the Plan, what happens if I do not receive my check?
A.  Call the Fund Office at  301-733-2602 
Q. I recently moved, how do I change my address?
A.  Changes must be in writing.  Send the change of address to the Fund Office.
